On July 6, according to StraitsTimes, TikTok is undergoing another round of global layoffs, including cuts to its Trust and Safety team. This marks the second consecutive year that the social media giant has reduced its workforce responsible for content moderation and platform security.
In response to inquiries from The Straits Times, a TikTok spokesperson stated, “We are continuing our restructuring to strengthen trust and safety in our global operating model, including consolidating some staff in key operations centers and improving how we work to ensure our teams remain scalable and agile.”
TikTok did not respond to inquiries regarding the number of employees affected at its Singapore office.
The company did not attribute the layoffs to its push for AI-powered content moderation but stated it will continue to “enhance platform security through the latest technological innovations.”
This layoff is the second time in two years that TikTok has reduced its Trust and Safety team.
In February 2025, TikTok laid off at least 12 employees in Singapore as part of an internal restructuring plan aimed at improving operational efficiency and aligning its workforce with business needs.
In addition, TikTok also conducted layoffs in Indonesia, affecting employees from the e-commerce platform Tokopedia. In 2024, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, acquired Tokopedia after Indonesia banned online shopping on its social media platforms.
Previously, reports indicated that Tokopedia, TikTok's e-commerce platform, was undergoing a new round of layoffs as part of an organizational restructuring.
CNBC Indonesia reported that over 450 employees in the company's technology department had been laid off, while other Indonesian media outlets cited sources saying that the layoffs had reduced Tokopedia's workforce to approximately 10%, compared to about 2,500 employees when TikTok acquired the company from GoTo in January 2024.
TikTok has not confirmed the scale of the layoffs but stated that it is restructuring its R&D department to support long-term sustainable growth.
A TikTok spokesperson stated, "We are reorganizing our R&D organization to focus on areas that can drive sustainable long-term growth for our business, creator community, and merchants on the platform." The company acknowledged that the layoffs were a difficult decision and stated that it will provide support to affected employees during the transition period.
TikTok also stated that it will continue to invest in Tokopedia to improve the platform experience for users and merchants, while continuing to support local Indonesian businesses and the broader e-commerce ecosystem.
Bloomberg reported on July 2 that TikTok laid off approximately 300 jobs in Dublin, Ireland.
Meanwhile, on July 1, several affected employees in Malaysia shared their experiences on social media.
An AI quality assurance expert at ByteDance posted on LinkedIn on July 2 describing the chaotic situation in the Kuala Lumpur office.
“My access card was revoked before I even entered the office, security guards had to escort three people out at a time… They constantly checked employees' belongings when entering and leaving the building,” she said, adding that laid-off employees were treated like “trash.” It is unclear whether she was also laid off.
The Creative Media and Publishing Union (CMPU) pointed out that while TikTok Singapore is not a unionized company, there are union members among its employees. The union urged affected union members to contact CMPU via email for assistance.
"In the event of layoffs, if individual union members work for non-union companies, the affiliated unions or associations of the National Trades Union Congress will provide assistance to the individual union members affected by the layoffs," the statement read.
